2016 Ford Focus EcoBoost Low Oil Pressure: What We Found During Diagnosis

At Car Vitals, we recently had a 2016 Ford Focus EcoBoost come in with a low oil pressure fault. When a vehicle arrives with low oil pressure, it is important to confirm the fault properly before jumping into repairs. Problems like this can quickly lead to serious engine damage if the root cause is not found.

Initial Checks

The first step was to measure the oil pressure. Testing confirmed that the oil pressure was low, so we moved on to further investigation to find the cause.

Sump Removed for Inspection

With low oil pressure confirmed, we removed the sump to inspect the lower end of the engine and oil pickup area. Although a new belt had previously been fitted, it appeared that insulation tape had been left in the sump from a previous repair. This had caused a blockage and ultimately damaged the oil pump.

Additional Faults Found

As the investigation continued, we removed the vacuum pump. This was found to be fully blocked with debris ingress, and the vacuum pump diaphragm had split and was spitting oil. Unfortunately, the damage did not stop there. The oil supply problems and contamination had also damaged the turbo.

Why Proper Diagnosis Matters

Low oil pressure is never something to ignore. It is not just a warning light issue — it can be a sign of serious internal engine problems. In this case, what started as a low oil pressure fault turned out to be a much bigger repair due to internal blockage and related component damage. It also shows why repairs must be carried out carefully and correctly, as contamination left behind can lead to major failure further down the line.
