2010 Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi Charging Fault & Pulley Damage in Birmingham
A 2010 Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi came into Car Vitals with a charging fault. The auxiliary belt was hanging off, so the first job was to find out what had caused it rather than simply fit another belt.

Diagnosis: Seized Alternator Clutch Pulley
Inspection showed the alternator clutch pulley had seized. When an overrunning alternator pulley locks up, it can put excessive load and vibration into the auxiliary-belt drive, which can damage the belt and other components in the same drive system.

Further Damage to the Air-Con Clutch Pulley
Unfortunately, the fault had also damaged the air-conditioning clutch pulley. On this setup the air-con drive cannot simply be bypassed as a cheaper temporary option, so the additional damage has to be taken into account when planning the repair.

Why Proper Diagnosis Matters
A belt hanging off can look like a straightforward belt failure, but fitting a new belt without finding the cause would only risk another failure. Diagnosing the seized pulley first allowed us to identify the root cause and the knock-on damage before parts were fitted.
Helping Spread the Cost of Larger Repairs
When one failure causes damage to several components, the repair bill can rise quickly. Although we cannot bypass the air-conditioning pulley on this vehicle, Car Vitals can help customers spread the cost of more expensive repairs through our available payment options.
