2016 Ford Fiesta Wet Belt: What We Found During Replacement

A 2016 Ford Fiesta came into Car Vitals for a wet belt replacement. The car had a full service history, but once stripped down the condition of the belt showed exactly why these engines need careful inspection rather than relying on service history alone.

The wet belt was heavily cracked

With the timing cover removed, the wet timing belt was visibly cracked and deteriorating. A wet belt runs inside the engine oil, and as it starts to break down, rubber debris can circulate through the lubrication system.

Why we do more than simply replace the belt

On a wet belt engine, replacing the belt is only part of the job. Belt material can contaminate the oil system and restrict oil flow, so we also inspect and clean the components that protect the engine and turbocharger.

On this Fiesta we removed and cleaned the oil strainer and stripped and cleaned the vacuum pump. Debris was present in the system, showing why these extra checks matter.

A second problem was waiting to cause trouble

During the vacuum pump inspection we found the internal diaphragm had split. This was not something the customer had brought the car in for, but it was discovered because the wet belt job was carried out properly and the related oil-system components were checked.

Left unresolved, this fault could have led to lubrication problems and ultimately turbocharger failure. Catching it at this stage potentially prevented a much larger repair bill.

Full service history does not always mean the wet belt is healthy

This Fiesta had a full service history, yet the belt was already badly cracked. Service history is important, but the actual condition of a wet belt, the oil used, contamination and age all matter. That is why inspection and preventative replacement are so important on engines fitted with belt-in-oil systems.

At Car Vitals we do not treat a wet belt replacement as a simple belt swap. We inspect the lubrication system, clean the relevant strainers and components, and look for the problems that can turn a preventative repair into an engine or turbo failure if they are missed.

If you own a Ford Fiesta or another vehicle fitted with a wet timing belt and you are unsure when it is due, or you want the belt condition checked, contact Car Vitals in Birmingham for advice and a quotation.
