2009 Volvo XC90 D5 Clutch & Dual-Mass Flywheel Replacement in Birmingham
This 2009 Volvo XC90 D5 Active AWD came into Car Vitals with a badly slipping clutch. Once stripped down, it was clear just how far the clutch had gone — how the vehicle was still driving in this condition was remarkable.
A Clutch That Was Well Beyond Worn
The clutch friction material had broken down badly and there was a large amount of debris inside the bellhousing. The pressure plate and clutch assembly also showed heavy wear, confirming that this was far beyond a simple adjustment or minor clutch issue.

The Job Became More Complicated
This repair was more involved than expected because water ingress had led to corrosion around the transmission assembly, causing the transfer box to seize onto the gearbox. That made separation and removal significantly more difficult and added time to an already substantial job.

Additional Vacuum and Boost Leaks Found
While carrying out the repair, we also found multiple vacuum and boost leaks. With access already opened up, replacing the affected parts at this stage would have been the sensible option, but the required Volvo parts were on back order. Rather than hide that from the customer, the issue was identified and documented so it could be dealt with properly when parts became available.
What We Replaced
The repair included a new clutch, dual-mass flywheel and concentric slave cylinder. The gearbox was also refilled with fresh gear oil as part of the work.

Spreading the Cost With Payment Assist
This was a large and unexpected repair, so the customer chose to take advantage of the Payment Assist option available through Car Vitals to spread the cost rather than having to fund the full repair in one payment.
